Audacious and song change popup

If you're using Linux and like the simple winamp-like UI for your music player, you are probably using Audacious (if not, you should definitely take a look). Audacious offers its own OSD for notifying about song changes etc, but I don't like it, and I wanted to make use of nice notification system Jaunty uses (notification-daemon). Audacious doesn't offer the possibility to communicate with notification-daemon out of the box (at least not that I know of), but offers the plugin which invokes arbitrary command upon certain actions, such as song change.

Here's what you need to do to get nice popup notification from Audacious:

Install notify-send:

jablan@jablan-hp:~$ sudo apt-get install libnotify-bin

This small command allows you to pop up anything from the command line, you can try it out:

jablan@jablan-hp:~$ notify-send "Audacious plays" "Blah Blah - We Are the Blah Blahs" -i audacious

Next, enable "Song Change" plugin in Audacious, and go to its properties. Add something like notify-send "Audacious" "%s" -i audacious to edit-box for the command upon the song change.

And, that's it, you should get a little black balloon displayed each time Audacious plays another song!

Thank you!

I accidentally deleted a question from Aaron Fournier which said:

Do you know if there is a way to get the album art in the notification?

I checked now, and it seems that Audacious isn't aware of the concept of album art, so although notify-send does support optional icon in the notification, the image itself isn't readily available.

When I get some time, I will look up some 3rd party tool which would know how to extract the image from ID3 tag and use it for displaying...

Again, my apologies for deleting the comment!

Does anybody know, what the format string for the artist of the actual song looks like?
The notify-message should look the following:
Audacious plays
Artist - Title

Is this possible somehow?
Regards, Ronelld

You can change the way Audacious displays the song in the playlist in: preferences/playlist
Changing it to "title format: Artist - Title" will get the job done

Hey, I have another question with regards to adding album art in the notification. I understand that Audacious isn't aware of album art, but it will still show a random picture in the folder that the audio file resides in. In my case, the only picture I have in that folder is the corresponding album art. Is there anyway to get that picture in the notification?

It's me again. Just thought I'd ask if anyone knows how to decrease the time between notifications if you're changing through songs quickly? They each hang for about 5 seconds and get way behind.

TIA
